The European Commission has announced an agreement with the SpaceRISE consortium to develop the IRIS multi-orbit satellite internet system. The IRIS system will leverage the advantages of both medium and low orbits and provide high-speed broadband internet services to private companies and citizens.
The multi-orbit array of more than 280 satellites known as IRIS² will provide an encrypted backbone for European Union governments and public agencies, and develop new commercial services.
