Turkmenistan and Afghanistan sign memoranda on TAPI project

Turkmenistan and Afghanistan have this week signed a package of documents on the implementation of projects in the fuel and energy sector.

In particular, the matter concerns the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline (TAPI), power transmission lines and Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) fiber-optic communication, and railways.

The solemn ceremony was attended by President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, members of the government, heads and representatives of relevant ministries and departments of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, as well as international companies involved in the implementation of projects.

Conveying greetings from President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the head of Afghanistan via digital video link, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov noted the high level of cooperation between the two countries in a wide range of areas. The country's Foreign Affairs Minister stressed the importance of signing documents meant to facilitate the practical implementation of joint projects of geopolitical and geo-economic importance for the entire Eurasian continent.

Delivering a speech at the Salam Khan presidential Palace in Kabul where the Afghan side hosted the ceremony, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani expressed gratitude to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for the constant support of Afghanistan, commitment to friendship between the two countries and peoples, as well as for the development of large-scale energy projects designed to have a constructive impact not only on the overall rebuilding of Afghanistan, but also on regional economic integration.

Among the signed documents noteworthy is the memorandum of understanding between "Türkmengaz" State Concern, "TAPI Pipeline Limited" and "Afgan Gaz Enterprise" companies on creation and development of the natural gas market in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan; Memorandum on cooperation in the field of communications and informatization between the "Türkmenaragatnaşyk" Agency and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan; Agreement between the state telecommunication enterprise "Türkmentelekom" owned by "Türkmenaragatnaşyk" agency and the communication company "Afghan Wireless" on connecting a fiber - optic cable between Turkmenistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on the state border - Serkhetabat-Turgundi and Imamnazar-Akina with the aim to organize international transit traffic; Agreement on electricity purchase in Afghanistan as part of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan electricity transmission line project.
