Germany closing down coal mines

The government of the Federal Republic of Germany and authorities of a number of lands agreed the plan on shut down of coal power plants.

The relevant documents were signed on January 16, 2020 by Germany’s Chancellor A.Merkel and Prime Ministers of Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, Caspian Energy news reports, citing the European media sources.

According to the schedule of shut down of power plants consuming fossil fuel, Germany can stop coal-driven electricity generation in 2035. At present, a coal-driven generation ensures 1/3 of electricity in Germany. The authorities of Germany have to be 100% sure that sufficient supply of other energy resources, including gas, will be ensured in the country in three years.

The rate of carbon dioxide emission in Germany totaled 866 million tons in 2018. The volume of 750 million tons, expected in 2020, will be reached only in 2028, while the goals of 2030 will not be reached until 2046. What caused such discrepancy in calculations and in practice? It is the vain hope that new energy sources will generate enough electricity. Eco activists’ protests brought to the shutdown of some nuclear power plants. Today, the rate of electricity generation out of alternative sources makes 35%, while wind and solar farms generate only 27%.
