Gas production in Azerbaijan surges 25.1%

In the first quarter of 2019 the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), together with its partner companies, maintained a stable level of oil production in the country and achieved a significant increase in gas production. Gas production in the country increased by 25.1% compared to the same period of the last year to comprise 9.11 billion cubic meters, oil production increased by 0.15% to reach 9.72 million tonnes. SOCAR produced 1.883 million tonnes of oil and 1.564 billion cubic meters of gas, Caspian Energy News ( reports with reference to the press statement of SOCAR.

“In order to increase gas production, special attention should be paid to the SOCAR’s new well drilled to the depth of 6,810 meters and commissioned at the Umid field. Drilling work at the said well with the highest flow rate was completed under the conditions of a complex geological structure, using for the first time different safe technical methods. Potential production volumes at the well are estimated at 2.5 million cubic meters of gas, 400 tonnes of condensate. At the same time rock samples were taken from the depth of 5940-6810 meters, and temperature and reservoir pressure data were obtained”, the statement says.

In the first quarter of this year SOCAR's oil exports comprised roughly 5.86 million tonnes of crude oil, while country’s gas exports and SOCAR’s gas exports increased by 3.27 billion cubic meters, up 27% compared with the same period of 2018. The growth of gas exports was mainly driven by gas supplies from Shah Deniz II to Turkey via the Southern Gas Corridor. So far, the volume of transportation via the pipeline amounted to 1.4 billion cubic meters of commercial gas. In January-March, exports of petroleum and petrochemical products amounted to about 4,568 thousand tonnes, up 10.5% compared with the same period of the last year.
