Caspian Energy (CE): Does the company plan to expand its fleet in the Caspian? Which possibilities does it have for that? Do you have plans to attract foreign investments?
Brian Garrad, Director of Caspian Marine Services (CMS):The fleet of our company is mainly engaged in oil and gas offshore operations off the shelf of the Caspian Sea. The deeper oil and gas fields lie below sea level and the further deep-water offshore jackets and floating facilities are located from the coastline, the more and more we start thinking about expansion of our fleet, supplementing our floating facilities with new modernized or specialized vessels equipped with brand-new marine and ship technologies.
The technical and engineering potential of our company has the widest possibilities to perform these tasks.
Naturally, customer demands and satisfaction play an important role here. Any project regardless of its scope requires adequate investment, inflows from domestic or foreign institutions. The key point is a properly built business strategy, a project successful in all respects, serving the national interests of our country.
CE: Which new incentives do the reforms declared by President Ilham Aliyev create for work of companies?
Brian Garrad: The reforms implemented by President Ilham Aliyev, in particular, in the part of further study and developmentof the petroleum industry in the context of gas deliveries from the Caspian to the European market also provide a big stimulus for our activity.
This is especially true for our work on development of Shah Deniz Stage 2, where 14 our ships are now engaged in operations in six areas.
Over time with the increase in offshore operations, the number of our vessels engaged in the Shah Deniz Stage 2 project will reach 16-17 units.
CE: Could you please tell in detail to what extent did you manage to cover services in Caspian projects, including Shah Deniz Stage 2?
Brian Garrad: Currently, there are different kinds of projects in the Caspian conducted by companies of the Caspian littoral states, where specialised vessels of our company take the active part. However, the most challenging and most important project for Azerbaijan is Shah Deniz Stage 2.
We take great pride to have performed successfully, timely and in a quality manner our work in accordance with the project requirements since the first day of the project. Currently, we have a good daily performance as evidenced by the feedback of our clients on maritime operations, namely on the construction of the pipeline towards the Shah Deniz gas field.
CE: Is the company ready to offer services outside the Caspian? Which works are performed to that end?
Brian Garrad: At the moment our ships are engaged in operations in the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea, where they successfully deliver services according to the standards of international companies.
At the same time we often get orders for short-term offshore towing operations from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.
Surely, the next phase for our company will be entrance to international markets, out of Caspian region. The work is ongoing in this direction.
CE: What do you think about the possibilities to offer new types of offshore services?
Brian Garrad: Unlike our company, there is no other marine company in the region having the same amount of specialised and technologically equipped ships to perform diving, crane and towing operations and at the same time being capable to carry out services for freight and supply operations, organise a speedy transportation of specialized staff to the platform and back to shore, provide floating living quarters with all conveniences in the marine environment. To perform the above-mentioned marine services, our clients give preference to our capabilities and, of course, to our extensive experience in this industry.
CE: Which vessels does the company plan to renovate? How successful were the similar projects performed before?
Brian Garrad: New projects or deep-water offshore operations require certain novelties and innovations, application of new technologies and standards. For example, construction of new high-speed vessels with the dynamic positioning system like Muslim Magomayev vessel or renovation of the existing vessels according to the necessary requirements, as well as increasing the number of vessels with rebuilt living quarters for specialized personnel are good examples of our experience in modernization and upgrade works conducted on our fleet units. For instance, the modernisation of the Qurban Abbasov crane vessel enabled us and our clients to successfully conduct technical maintenance at the oil platforms of the Azeri-Chyrag-Gunashli fields and enabled us to retain and increase the level of production on the mentioned fields, which in turn can be considered as valuable contribution of our company towards stability of Fuel and Energy Sector, which is still the main sector of Azerbaijan economy.
