Opening ceremony of TANAP to be held today

The opening ceremony of the Trans Anatolian gas pipeline TANAP, designed for gas transportation from Azerbaijan to Turkey and from there to Europe, will be held in the Turkish city of Eskishehir (Turkey) today, Caspian Energy News (www.caspianenergy.net) reports with reference to the press service of the Head of State of Azerbaijan.

Presidents of Azerbaijan and Turkey – Ilham Aliyev and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, heads of a number of states and governments, ministers of energy, executives of energy companies will attend the opening ceremony.

The Southern Gas Corridor project, a part of which is TANAP, is of big significance in terms of diversification and security of energy supply of Turkey and the EU states, as well as envisages gas supply via the South Caucasus Pipeline, TANAP and TAP. 

TANAP involves gas supply to Turkey and Europe within the framework of the second stage of development of Shah Deniz field.

The project of the pipeline was announced at the third Black Sea energy and economic forum hosted in Istanbul on November 17, 2011. On 26 December 2011, Turkey and Azerbaijan signed a memorandum about mutual understanding, consortium for the construction and operation of the gas pipeline.

SGC is a project of energy security, diversification and free competition.

Owing to this project, Azerbaijan will export its natural resources for many decades and thereby diversify the European market. For Europe it means a new gas source which it is in need of. Total cost of the project is estimated at $45bln.

From 2020 onwards 10 bcm will be annually supplied to Europe.

TANAP will be implemented in 4 stages. The carrying capacity of the pipeline will be increased up to 16 bcm in 2020 (10bcm –Turkey, 6bcm – Europe), up to 23bcm in 2023, and up to 31 bcm in 2026.
