Railroad to link Caspian countries with EU

Railroad officials of Azerbaijan and Italy discuss prospects of cooperation

The parties focused on issues concerning cooperation between the railways of Azerbaijan and Italy.
Advantages of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and Astara (Azerbaijan) – Astara (Iran) line in freight transportation towards Europe-Asia were considered. Besides, discussed were possibilities of the freight transportation in the direction of Central Asia, Iran and China. Guests from Italy stressed the importance of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway for Italy and whole Europe, comparing its significance with the energy projects of Azerbaijan. According to them, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway will promote much broader development of the freight transportation system and increase of cargo traffic in the direction of Europe-Asia.
In the course of the meeting, the parties discussed cargo transportation from the Italian ports Trieste and Bari to Iran via the Turkish port Mersin, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railways and territory of Azerbaijan, and from Iran to China via the Central Asia.
Apart from this, considered were possibilities of further cargo transportation to France, Germany and Benelux countries by means of Italian railways. The Italian side, which presented the Azerbaijani side information about export-import operations between EU and Iran, Central Asia and China, expressed its interest in cooperation with Azerbaijan Railways CJSC.
