Four heads of state to arrive in Baku

On October 30, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili will take part in the opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, Caspian Energy News ( reports.

Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed the intergovernmental agreement on construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway corridor on February 7, 2007.

The project includes construction of the 98-km Kars-Akhalkalaki railway, of which 68 km will pass through Turkey, 30 km via Georgia, and the reconstruction of the 183-km Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi section in Georgia. The construction of the Georgian section is financed by Azerbaijan by means of the two loans worth in total $775 million.

At the initial stage, the volume of cargo transportation via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is expected to be at the level of 5 million tonnes per year, later the cargo transportation volume is expected to reach 15-17 million tonnes of cargoes per year.
