BTK to be put into operation

The commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is due on October 30 in Baku, Caspian Energy News ( reports.

On February 7, 2007, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed the intergovernmental agreement on construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway corridor.

The project includes construction of a 98-km Kars-Akhalkalaki railway, of which 68 km will go via Turkey and 30 km via Georgia, as well as reconstruction of the 183-km section of the Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi section in Georgia. The construction of the Georgian section is financed by Azerbaijan, which allocated two concessional loans to Georgia for a total of $775 million.

At the initial stage, the volume of cargo transportation via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is expected to be at the level of 5 million tonnes per year. Later cargo transportation is expected to reach 15-17 million tonnes of cargoes per year.
