BTK to be put into operation

The commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is due on October 30 in Baku, Caspian Energy News (www.caspianenergy.net) reports.

On February 7, 2007, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed the intergovernmental agreement on construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway corridor.

The project includes construction of a 98-km Kars-Akhalkalaki railway, of which 68 km will go via Turkey and 30 km via Georgia, as well as reconstruction of the 183-km section of the Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi section in Georgia. The construction of the Georgian section is financed by Azerbaijan, which allocated two concessional loans to Georgia for a total of $775 million.

At the initial stage, the volume of cargo transportation via the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is expected to be at the level of 5 million tonnes per year. Later cargo transportation is expected to reach 15-17 million tonnes of cargoes per year.
