Measures underway to organize transit traffic through country to turn Azerbaijan into transit hub

Due to the substantial increase of international internet channels’ capacity in recent years, the Internet traffic to Georgia, Iran, Iraq and Central Asia is conducted through Azerbaijan. The information on traffic exchange is from the annual report “Ministry of Communications and High Technologies - 2013”, Caspian Energy News (www.caspianenergy.net) reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

According to the report published by the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies (MCHT), during the reporting year the overall scope of incoming and outgoing international traffic in Azerbaijan made 518.7 million minutes and 157.6 million minutes respectively. Decrease has been observed in the volume of international telephone traffic since 2011.

This is mainly linked with the widespread of the Internet in the country and  preference  of population to talks over the internet. In 2013, more than 1219.5 km of fiber-optic lines have been laid and the country’s regional centers have been covered with optic network. As compared with 2012, total capacity of the international internet channels has increased 50 Gbit / s and reached 250 Gbit / s.

Note that to turn the country into a transit hub, measures were also continued in the current year to organize transit traffic through Azerbaijan. As a result of growing demand for Internet services in the country and existing technical opportunities, the total capacity of the international internet channels is 250 Gbit / s.

In the first half of 2014, the volume of international incoming traffic in Azerbaijan decreased 58.8 million minutes and amounted to 201.5 million minutes compared to the same period of last year, and the volume of outgoing traffic decreased by 21.3 million minutes to 65.3  million minutes.
