Caspian Sea status agreement can be reached, President

During the meeting with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev hosted in Astana on September 10 President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani hailed prospects for energy cooperation with Azerbaijan. Speaking about the status of the Caspian Sea, President Rouhani expressed hope that by coordinating efforts agreement in this area can be reached in the near future”, Caspian Energy News (www.caspianenergy.net) reports with reference to the press office of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In his turn, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev accepted the Iranian President`s invitation to the next trilateral summit of the Azerbaijani, Iranian and Russian heads of state to be held in Tehran.

Speaking about the economic ties between Azerbaijan and Iran, President Ilham Aliyev hailed successful cooperation in this area. The head of state noted the importance of construction of Ordubad hydroelectric power station, Iran Khodro automobile plant and a pharmaceutical plant in Azerbaijan in terms of the expansion of the bilateral economic cooperation.

It stands to mention that in August 2016 Baku hosted the trilateral summit with participation of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of Iran Hassan Rouhani and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, during which the Joint Declaration of the Summit was signed.

As early as September 12, 2000 Russia, Iran and India signed an agreement about International North-South transport corridor in Saint Petersburg. The agreement entered in force on May 21, 2002. Azerbaijan joined the agreement in September 2005. Implementation of the project on construction of the railway within the framework of the North-South project promises big economic benefit compared to other alternative international transport routes.

North-South is a multimodal route for passenger and cargo transportation from Petersburg to the Indian port of Mumbai. According to preliminary estimates, at the first stage the carrying capacity of the railroad will total 1.4 million passengers and from 5 up to 7 million cargoes per year, and 15-20 million tonnes in future. 22 tunnels and 15 bridges will be erected along the railroad.
