Record set in 2015 1st half for European offshore wind

European offshore wind industry set a record year for installations in the first half of 2015, according to the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), Caspian Energy News ( reports with reference to the Anadolu Agency.

In the first six months of 2015, the European offshore wind industry installed more new capacity than in any other year on record as several projects reached completion while the deployment of larger turbines increased.

According to EWEA's mid-year offshore wind statistics installations published on Thursday, in the first half of 2015, installed capacity reached 2.3 gigawatts (GW) - tripling the grid-connected capacity compared to the same period last year.

The total installed offshore wind capacity in Europe hit 10.3 GW in 82 wind farms across 11 countries.

Kristian Ruby, chief policy officer at the European Wind Energy Association, said that the data reflects a commitment to offshore wind development in Europe through the number of completed projects, the explosive growth in Germany and the use of higher capacity wind turbines.

Additionally, with 584 wind turbines fully grid-connected in the first half of 2015, the average machine size rose to 4.2MW from 3.5MW a year earlier as manufacturers continue to develop larger models with higher energy capture.
