Law on nuclear energy use approved in the first reading

On Wednesday parliamentarians decided how to regulate a nuclear sector. The draft law “About nuclear energy use” was approved by the parliament on Wednesday at the plenary session, Caspian Energy News ( reports with reference to Energy News of Kazakhstan.

Presenting the project, Minister of Energy Vladimir Shkolnik noted that the document envisages determination of radiation danger categories and sources of ionizing radiation.

Regulations determining decision making procedures regarding the construction of nuclear units and burial points are introduced.

Speaking about the necessity of creating of the nuclear fuel bank, the minister clarified “Nuclear fuel bank is storage of nuclear fuel. It is a product which is used for producing a fuel for operation NPPs around the world. This bank is being created in order to prevent broad spread of double-purpose technologies, namely the fuel enrichment. For instance, if the country needs a fuel for NPP, it can apply to the international bank and get as much as it needs”.
