Azerbaijan’s parliament approves historical document on the Caspian Sea

 At the plenary session held on Tuesday, Milli Majlis (parliament) of Azerbaijan approved the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea, Trend reports. It bears reminding that the heads of the Caspian states signed the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea at the 5th summit hosted in Aktau on 12 August 2018. It has been the historical document for the region, the work over which lasted for two decades since 1996.

The convention was signed by President of Russia Vladimir Putin, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and President of Iran Hassan Rouhani. 

Besides, a number of agreements on cooperation in the Caspian Sea were discussed at the session of Milli Majlis (parliament) of Azerbaijan. 

Raised for the discussion of the parliament were the issues of approval of the Protocol “On cooperation in the fight against organized crime in the Caspian Sea” to the Agreement “On security cooperation in the Caspian Sea” dated November 18, 2010, Protocol “On cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the Caspian Sea” to the “Agreement on cooperation in the Caspian Sea” dated November 18, 2010, the Protocol “On cooperation and mutual activity between border agencies” to the Agreement “On security cooperation in the Caspian Sea” dated November 18, 2010, the Agreement “On cooperation in the field of transport between the governments of the Caspian littoral states,” the Agreement “On prevention of incidents in the Caspian Sea”, as well as the Agreement “On trade and economic cooperation between the governments of the Caspian littoral states.”

In the course of discussions, the deputies noted the importance of these documents for ensuring security in the Caspian Sea. The documents were put to the vote and approved.
