GUAM states sign communiqué

Yesterday (October 8) Foreign Ministers of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova signed a joint communiqué at the GUAM session, which reflected the priorities of the organization. The meeting was attended by Foreign Affairs Ministers of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov, Georgia Mikhail Janelidze, Ukraine Pavel Klimkin, Moldova Andrey Galbur, as well as GUAM Secretary General Altay Efendiyev, Caspian Energy News ( reports with reference to

Special session of the council of GUAM Foreign Affairs Ministers took place in Tbilisi on October 8 and was dedicated to the 20th anniversary.

GUAM organization was established at the initiative of Presidents of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova in 1997. Uzbekistan has joined the organization since 1999, which is why it was renamed into GUUAM (the abbreviation consists of the initial letters of the member countries’ names). In 2005, the Uzbek authorities declared about the abandoning the organization due to the “change of the initially set tasks and goals of the organization. At the first GUAM summit hosted in Kiev in May 2006, it was decided to reform the organization which is why it was called “The organization for democracy and economic development – GUAM”.
